Why Learn Languages
Competition
Our signature event, the Why Learn Languages Competition, started in 2011 as a single-language contest in one state called Why Learn Chinese. Through Why Learn Languages, it has now grown into a national competition open to middle and high school students of all languages across the country.
The competition brings students together through essays and videos that celebrate multilingualism and cultural exchange. Unlike traditional language competitions that focus mainly on “what” and “how,” ours encourages long-term motivation, advocacy, and the power of youth voices. Each year, the theme reflects a different focus and consistently receives an outstanding response.
This Year's Theme is...
"Connecting the World through Language and Culture"
We chose "Connecting the World through Language and Culture" as the theme for our competition to highlight the power of language in fostering global understanding and collaboration. Learning languages opens doors to meaningful connections through exchange programs, study trips, pen-pal friendships, cross-country collaborations, community outreach, and global trade opportunities. Whether students engage in cultural exchanges, international projects, or professional opportunities, languages serve as a bridge that brings people together, fostering mutual respect and a deeper appreciation of the world.
